The RTITB Counterbalance Forklift Truck (Novice) Course is designed for individuals with little or no prior experience who need to learn how to operate a forklift truck safely and efficiently in the workplace. This course is held in our Training Centre in Linwood, near Paisley but we can also come to your place of work on request.

Description

The RTITB Counterbalance Forklift Truck (Novice) Course is designed for individuals with little or no prior experience who need to learn how to operate a forklift truck safely and efficiently in the workplace.

Delivered in person at our training centre, this 4-day intensive course combines practical training with essential theory to meet the standards set out in the HSE Approved Code of Practice (L117) and RTITB guidelines.

Upon successful completion, candidates will have the knowledge and practical skills required to operate a counterbalance forklift truck safely, helping employers meet their legal obligations under workplace health and safety legislation.

This course is held in our Training Centre in Linwood, near Paisley but we can also come to your place of work on request.

Prerequisites

This course is designed for novice operators and has minimal entry requirements. However:

  • Candidates must be of school leaving age
  • Candidates should be physically fit and capable of safely operating machinery
  • A basic level of English understanding is recommended for safety and assessment purposes
  • Candidates must have access to an email address

What's Involved

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to forklift operation, covering both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical training.

Core Training Areas

  • Introduction to the counterbalance forklift and controls
  • Pre-use inspections and daily safety checks
  • Principles of stability and load handling
  • Manoeuvring in open and confined spaces
  • Forward and reverse steering techniques
  • Stacking and de-stacking at low, eye, and high levels
  • Use of racking systems and cages
  • Vehicle loading and unloading procedures
  • Safe refuelling/recharging procedures

Assessment

To successfully complete the course, candidates must pass the following RTITB assessments:

Theory Test

  • Multiple-choice questions assessing knowledge of safety and operations

Pre-Use Inspection Test

  • Demonstration of correct safety checks before operating the truck

Practical Driving Test

  • Assessment of operating ability, including manoeuvring, load handling, and safe working practices

All assessments are conducted in line with RTITB accreditation requirements.
