The RTITB Counterbalance Forklift Truck (Experienced Operator) Course is designed for operators who already have practical forklift truck experience but require formal refresher, re-registration, or assessment training to meet workplace and legal requirements.
Delivered in person at our training centre, this intensive course combines practical assessment with theory refresher training to ensure operators continue to work safely, efficiently, and in line with current legislation and RTITB standards.
Upon successful completion, candidates will demonstrate the required level of competence to continue operating a counterbalance forklift truck safely in the workplace, helping employers meet their legal obligations under workplace health and safety legislation.
This course is held in our Training Centre in Linwood, near Paisley but we can also come to your place of work on request.
Prerequisites
This course is intended for experienced operators. Candidates should:
- Have previous practical experience operating a counterbalance forklift truck
- Ideally hold previous forklift certification or provide evidence of experience
- Be of school leaving age
- Be physically fit and capable of safely operating machinery
- Have a basic understanding of English for safety and assessment purposes
- Have access to an email address
What's Involved
This course refreshes and updates existing operator knowledge and practical skills, focusing on safe operating techniques, workplace awareness, and current best practice.

- Refresher on counterbalance forklift controls and safe operation
- Pre-use inspections and defect reporting procedures
- Stability principles and safe load handling techniques
- Manoeuvring safely in open and confined working environments
- Forward and reverse steering techniques
- Stacking and de-stacking at various heights
- Safe use of racking systems and working areas
- Vehicle loading and unloading procedures
- Refuelling/recharging procedures and safety precautions
- Current legislation, operator responsibilities, and workplace safety awareness
Course Structure
- 3 day practical, in-person training course depending on experience and operator numbers
- Tutor-led refresher instruction with practical exercises
- Assessment of existing operating ability and safe working practices
- Realistic workplace scenarios to reinforce competence and safety awareness
- Training aligned with RTITB standards and current legislation
Assessment
To successfully complete the course, candidates must pass the following RTITB assessments:
Theory Test
- Multiple-choice questions assessing current knowledge of forklift safety and operations
Pre-Use Inspection Test
- Demonstration of correct pre-operational safety checks and defect identification
Practical Driving Test
- Assessment of operating ability, including manoeuvring, load handling, stacking, and safe working practices
All assessments are conducted in line with RTITB accreditation requirements.
